APD Global engineers are presenting eight accepted technical papers at the world's premier power systems session - original research, not a conference brochure.

Every two years the world's power systems community convenes in Paris. CIGRE Paris Session 2026 runs 23–28 August at the Palais des Congrès. Papers are peer-reviewed by the leading experts in each study committee. Getting one accepted is an achievement. Eight is a statement.

APD Global’s papers span four study committees - B3, B5, C4 and D2 - covering the most urgent engineering problems of the transition era: how to protect a grid increasingly dominated by inverter-based resources, how to maintain frequency stability when traditional inertia has been displaced by solar and wind, and how to secure digital substations against threats that didn't exist when most of them were designed.

The four research threads

B5 - Protection & Automation Validating distance protection performance in IBR-dominated grids using EMT simulations and hardware-in-the-loop testing. Replaying EMT-derived COMTRADE records into physical protection relays to expose maloperation that conventional studies miss. Separately: building expertise in IEC 61850 process bus from the ground up.
C4 - Power System Technical Performance Dynamic modelling of coordinated UFLS and DER shedding across a 3,500-bus RMS representation of the NEM. Tested dynamically armed UFLS relays under high-DER conditions to reduce unnecessary load shedding while preventing the counterproductive disconnection of active generation.
D2 - Information Systems, Telecoms & Cybersecurity Evaluating the resilience of modern digital substations through real-world testing - protection and control systems, legacy communication protocols, and next-generation security technologies including post-quantum cryptography.
B3 - Substations & Electrical Installations AI-driven brownfield substation design - digital twins, generative design and reinforcement learning to optimise layouts, reduce outage duration and manage legacy constraints in complex upgrade environments.

This work represents years of applied research conducted alongside delivery of real infrastructure - not academic theory separated from the field. The same engineers writing these papers are commissioning the substations, testing the relays and designing the transmission lines.
