Day three of CIGRE 2026 brought a recap from the APD Global delegation in Paris - filmed against some of the most scenic backdrops of the Session week.
The themes ran straight through the firm's substations and secondary systems practice. Delegates discussed the rapidly changing environment for substation design and construction, and how streamlined processes and closer collaboration can keep pace with the growing demands on substation delivery.
One APD Global paper at the Session covers the development of an IEC 61850 process bus demonstration, testing and training environment - building the capability to prove digital substation architectures before they reach the field. The knowledge exists and the infrastructure exists; what the industry needs now is the commitment to make it reliable.
Another thread: consistency. Applying industry standards such as IEEE 2800 uniformly across the sector is what will keep power systems well protected as inverter-based resources multiply.
