GPS registration. A fifty-year-old plant. Full compliance.

Generator Performance Standard registered with AEMO for an alumina refinery on Western Power's SWIS - complex legacy plant brought into full compliance through rigorous site testing and precise modelling.

January 2024 · Western Australia

The Generator Performance Standard framework sets out the technical requirements a generator must meet to connect to the grid. For modern plant, this is an engineering challenge. For a facility more than fifty years old - with legacy equipment, layered upgrades and complex interactions across multiple generation units - it demands a different level of precision.

APD Global’s Power Systems team conducted comprehensive site testing, developed accurate dynamic models of the plant's generation and control systems, and delivered the technical documentation required for full GPS registration.

The result: a major industrial facility on Western Power's South West Interconnected System, fully registered with AEMO, compliant with current standards, and clear to continue operating as Australia's energy rules continue to evolve.

The capability

APD Global’s Power Systems group handles GPS registration, NEM and WEM connection studies, system strength assessments, model validation and compliance testing across Australia. The team works with generators, network owners and large industrial clients - delivering the technical outcomes that matter when the regulatory bar is high.
