Eraring BESS Grid Connection

Grid connection design for the battery sitting on Australia’s largest power-station site - new BESS substation and the 330 kV tie into the existing Eraring switchyard. Primary and secondary design for the new BESS substation and the 330 kV tie into the existing Eraring switchyard.

Eraring is already one of the most important nodes on the east-coast grid. Origin is building the battery on that site so the same switchyard that served the coal plant can firm renewables and hold the network as the plant retires. Origin’s own line: when complete, Australia’s largest power-station site hosts the nation’s largest approved battery - critical infrastructure at the centre of the system for decades.

APD delivered the primary and secondary design for the new BESS substation and the works that tie it into the existing 330 kV Eraring switchyard - Stage 1 and Stage 2. The design had to sit on live 330 kV plant without taking the broader network with it.

What APD delivered

  • Primary plant design - new BESS substation including 330 kV switchgear, transformers, busbars and civil works
  • Secondary systems - protection, control, SCADA and communications
  • Switchyard integration - connection of the BESS into the existing Eraring 330 kV infrastructure
  • Stage 2 extension design - capacity increase and additional connection circuits
