Woodside Pluto - NWIS integration.

Connection studies, protection and model validation so an islanded LNG plant can take solar and battery power from the North West Interconnected System.

ScopeConnection application, model validation, protection, technical-rules compliance

Pluto has run islanded on its own embedded generation. As part of the Train 2 expansion and decarbonisation programme, Woodside planned to connect the facility to the North West Interconnected System so solar and a battery could displace some of the on-site gas-turbine load.

Connecting an LNG plant that already makes its own power to a grid whose total load is less than 200 MW is not a standard generator application. APD Global delivered the connection application, PowerFactory model validation, protection studies and technical-rules compliance - in collaboration with Horizon Power Planning and Pilbara ISOCO.

What APD Global delivered

  • R1 data assessment for the connection application
  • Power-quality studies against Horizon Power technical rules
  • Stage 1 protection - 7.5 MW solar import on the Dampier 33 kV feeder, including loss-of-field and reverse-power protection on existing generation
  • Stage 2 BESS protection - differential settings on the overhead line into Pluto, coordinated with plant and downstream feeders
  • Model validation and an independent, ring-fenced compliance assessment
  • Detailed system studies with the Pluto model integrated into the NWIS PowerFactory model
