APD Global is delivering Western Australia’s first 4G signalling system for the Public Transport Authority, with Nokia - part of METRONET, the biggest investment in Perth’s rail network in the state’s history. The work is the radio layer under the signalling - more than 80 LTE / 4.9G sites along tracks and through tunnels, from open corridor to the bored tunnels under the city.
During a visit to Nokia’s data facility, APD examined the core networks, observed the real-time call environment and reviewed the cabinet design and installation that hosts the critical equipment - engaging directly with Nokia’s experts on the end-to-end architecture ahead of delivery. The same house then builds and installs the plant.
Delivery on a live rail network means working when the trains don’t: for the Forrestfield–Airport Link rack infrastructure, a special train was assigned from Optus Stadium to run at 1:50am, stopping in the tunnels to deliver the racks. That programme has its own page.
